Eric was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. In the summer of 1995, while on a fishing trip with his father, Eric made a small bark canoe, from a fallen piece of bark. Hence began a career of building birch bark canoes.

In 1996, he moved to Ely, Minnesota, to run a resort and build full-size canoes. His first full size canoe was built in the summer of 1996. Eric began building bark canoes full time, the winter of 1996/1997.

In addition to bark canoes, Eric also builds Kayaks, snowshoes, decorated paddles, baskets, snowsticks, rustic furniture and other traditional art crafts of the past. All pieces are made completely by hand, using traditional tools and methods, and are made to order.
